Tech and Humanitarian Influencers to Gather for Presentations and Fireside Chat
New York, August 22, 2016 – On September 7, at 7 p.m. EST, at Soho House in New York City, OVERTURE will host the next gathering for its Digital Humanitarian™ Series (the first of the fall season). The Guardian’s Eamonn Store will provide opening remarks for the invitation-only event, which is being keynoted by Nicholas Negroponte (founder of MIT Media Lab and One Laptop per Child). Negroponte will conclude the evening with a fireside chat with the IRC’s Ravi Gurumurthy.
Explains NY media executive and OVERTURE founder Donnovan Andrews: “Our Digital Humanitarian™ Series offers intimate events with world-leading experts within the fields of tech and media, as well as from NGOs and governmental organizations – with the common goal of sharing ideas, research and progress toward leveraging technologies to enact change across international humanitarian efforts. Internet connectivity has already changed our lifestyles. There’s still room for connectivity to impact the lives of those in crisis zones and beyond.”
Keynote speaker Nicholas Negroponte is a 14-time TED Talk veteran. A Greek American architect, he’s the founder and Chairman Emeritus of Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab; he also founded the One Laptop per Child initiative.
Co-presenter Ravi Gurumurthy is the Chief Innovation Officer at the International Rescue Committee (IRC). As well, he’s the former Director of Strategy for the UK’s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC).
Introductory Speaker Eamonn Store is The Guardian's North American CEO. Previously, Store was President of Agency Development at MEC (a GroupM company); he also held senior positions at Starcom, Profero, and Carat International.
OVERTURE organizes the Digital Humanitarian™ Series, and other events in NY and London, to foster coalitions and action: by bringing the right decision-makers together to enable idea generation, tech development, funding and distribution of apps, devices and other technologies that will truly help alleviate the plight of refugees and others living in extreme poverty. Staff is in the midst of planning the organization’s inaugural annual event, “The Forum,” slated for Q2 2017.
